Updates in Japan


  • On 21 December 2021, the government announced:
    • Extension of border control measures till early January, barring new entries by foreigners from abroad and requiring returning Japanese nationals and foreign residents to quarantine in government-designated facilities.
    • Testing of all people found to be infected with COVID-19 in Japan for Omicron. Those who have had close contact with people infected with the new variant will be asked to stay at designated facilities for two weeks, rather than at home.
  • On 28 December 2021, the Japanese government announced the retraction of the previous decisions to allow examinees who had close contact with people infected with the Omicron coronavirus variant to take university entrance exams if they have tested negative and have no symptoms.
