South African Coronavirus Strain detected in New Zealand.

  • On 25 January, New Zealand confirms its first COVID-19 community case in over two months, when one case tested positive for the South African strain of the coronavirus following a two-week mandatory quarantine.
  • Australian Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt has since suspended the nation’s travel bubble with New Zealand for 72 hours.
  • With sea freight to and from New Zealand below pre-COVID frequency and volume, businesses are faced with a significant increase in freight costs and transit times. New Zealand Food & Grocery Council CEO Katherine Rich anticipates that high prices, lack of access and reduced exports/imports to be amongst some of the significant medium to long term-effects.
