New Zealand initiated vaccine programme.

  • COVID-19 in New Zealand is well under control, albeit Auckland is guarding against the virulent UK strain of coronavirus. Auckland imposed a three-day snap lockdown after locating the UK virus in a family of three.
  • New Zealand began its COVID-19 vaccine rollout on 20 February. The rollout aims to cover the country’s population of 5 million by the end of 2021.
  • National carrier Air New Zealand will trial a digital travel pass (termed “vaccination passport”) starting April in preparation of restarting international travel. Airlines and border authorities will be granted access to passenger health information, including their COVID-19 vaccinations status via an app to help streamline travel once borders reopen.
  • On food trade, New Zealand is coming to terms with China suspending their seafood exports like mussels and fishmeal. The policy is believed to be in response to New Zealand’s food packaging allegedly carrying coronavirus traces.
