RESTRICTIONS STILL IN PLACE
Government to take the Olympic torch relay off public roads and eyeing extension of quasi-state emergency in Tokyo and Osaka.
MEASURES
- On 6 July 2021, it was announced that the Olympic torch relay will be taken off public roads in almost all areas except small islands. In addition, it is advised for the general public not to gather along the roadside to watch the Olympic marathons and race walk events in Sapporo between 5 to 8 August 2021.
- Due to the recent rebound in infections in Tokyo, the government eyes to extend the COVID-19 quasi-state emergency in Tokyo during the Olympics for about an additional month. Osaka has also asked of the government to extend the quasi-state emergency until end of July.
- In addition, Japan may lower the spectator cap at the Tokyo Olympics to 5000 per venue instead of the 50% capacity with a maximum of 10000 people.
