ENTERING RECOVERY PHASE

Australia’s vaccine rollout and shipping performance causes for concern.

UPDATES

  • The government extended the lockdown in greater Melbourne to 10 June after an outbreak. In Melbourne if people can work from home they must work from home. For the rest of Victoria state, the government also clarified up to 50% of staff or a maximum of 20 people will be allowed in the office. The business community has called for further easing of restrictions, after the government confirmed Melbourne citizens must remain in a 25-kilometre radius of their home after lockdown.
  • A recent John Hopkins University study revealed Australia’s vaccine rollout “as being below the global average”. Just 500,000 Australians have had both jabs, putting Australia in the below world average category when it comes to the percentage of the population that is fully vaccinated.
  • Shipping Australia called for the government to step up vaccination efforts, after a recent World Bank survey revealed Australia ports underperformed during the pandemic. They noted many Australian container box ports could not adequately handle ships and increased container trade during the pandemic.
